Biography: Trudi Rose

TRUDI ROSETrudi Dyer Rose was born on January 30, 1965, in Dallas, Texas. Her father, Kendall Dyer, is an investment banker. Her mother, Betty Dyer, is a homemaker and volunteers at her church and a variety of Dallas charities, including a teen crisis pregnancy service. Her brother, James Edward Dyer, born in 1963, currently works as an investment banker with his father's firm in Dallas, where he lives with his wife and three children.

Trudi graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas in 1984, and entered the University of Mississippi that fall, following her brother James, who entered the university in 1982. During his senior year at Ole Miss, James and his sister shared a house on N. 14th Street in Oxford, which was famous for the day-long parties that Trudi like to throw on spring weekends.

After graduating with a general business degree in 1989, Trudi and her close friend and fellow business school graduate, Kelly Clinton, opened Cupid's Couples - a dating service for people in the Oxford area. Dyer and Clinton often said that they got the idea for the dating service after a spring break visit in March of 1988 to Tallahassee, Florida, where they saw three such establishments on the same city block. Trudi and Kelly developed the business plan for Cupid's Couples as part of a class project during their senior year.

Cupid's Couples was not an instant success, but through an aggressive plan of advertising on both the radio and in the newspapers, the service began to catch on with university students and soon with other Oxford residents. Dyer and Clinton first operated the dating service primarily by telephone out of Rose's small house. Then, as their client base began to increase, they rented a three-room office suite in the Ford office building on S. Lamar Avenue in Oxford, hired a full-time secretary and two part-time workers, and began to see their business really blossom. Trudi and Kelly shrewdly managed their investment portfolio, including rental properties and a part-interest in a video-rental store, and revenues from Cupid's Couples, Inc. passed the quarter-million dollar mark in 1995.

In 1993, Trudi Dyer met Bobby Joe Rose, a respected defense attorney with an Oxford firm. The couple reportedly began dating after they met at the Oxford Chamber of Commerce Spring Town Meeting and Social. Trudi Dyer and Bobby Joe Rose were married on October 9, 1993, at St. Peter's Episcopalian Church in Oxford.

Although Trudi often professed that she wanted children, the demands of her growing business took up most of her time. She often worked into the night and on Saturdays to manage the volumes of past and present client files, which were kept in large file cabinets in her inner office.

Trudi Dyer Rose was found dead in her office on April 3, 2000. The investigation into her death is ongoing.
