Biography: Natasha Van Moore

NatashaNatasha Van Moore was born July 17, 1966 to Harold and Kitty Van Moore in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father, who passed away in 1996, was employed by the Shelby County Division of Public Works. Her mother is an elementary school teacher in the Shelby County School System. Her older brother, Cecil, is currently incarcerated in Arkansas, serving a 15-year sentence for armed robbery. Her younger sister, Amelia, lives with her husband and three children in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Van Moore graduated from Millington Central High School in 1985 and entered Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee that fall. She was an average student and graduated in 1990 with a degree in psychology.

Unsure about what she wanted to do after graduation, Van Moore moved to Oxford to live with a friend who had another year left at the University of Mississippi. Soon after she arrived in town, she accepted a job at Cupid's Couples, a local dating service that had recently relocated to an office on the Square and needed a secretary/receptionist/clerk to help support their larger office.

Van Moore worked at Cupid's Couples for nearly four years. Through Cupid's Couples clients and friends she made on the UM campus, Van Moore recognized a need, particularly in the college community, for etiquette lessons. She decided to start her own business - a modern day charm school - giving lessons to sorority pledges in her off hours from Cupid's Couples. Over the years, she developed relationships with most of the sororities on campus and expanded to include other clients and eventually developed a stable customer base. In 1994, Van Moore decided to leave Cupid's Couples and focus all her efforts on Good Graces. Before leaving, she trained her replacement Corinna Morgan, who had been working part time at Cupid's Couples and was planning to work full time when she graduated UM.

Once she was able to focus all her attention on Good Graces, Van Moore soon realized her students would benefit from opportunities to practice their new skills in the real world. With help from her friend and former employer, Trudi Rose, Van Moore recruited members of Oxford society to attend small, formal parties with her students. These get-togethers proved invaluable to her students training and have been an integral part of the Good Graces curriculum ever since.

In May 1998, Trudi Rose contacted Van Moore to say she had a client she thought Van Moore would like. Rose said she thought the two would make a good match. Van Moore trusted Rose's judgment and agreed to meet the man, Ken Edwards. Van Moore and Edwards were smitten with each other from the moment they met and were married just three months later. Unfortunately, the romance did not stand the test of time and Edwards filed for divorce in January 1999. After a bitter legal battle, the divorce was finalized in June of 1999 and Van Moore found herself one and a half million dollars richer.

Since her divorce, Van Moore has dated extensively, often being seen around town with several different men each week. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering with several non-profit organizations including the Exchange Club Family Center, the Oxford Humane Society, the Yoknapatawpha County Literacy Council, and the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council.
