Witness Interview: Dave Woolworth

N = Det. Terry Nelson
D = David Woolworth

N: Hello, Dave. Good to see you again.

D: Right. What is it now?

N: State your name, birthdate, and address for the record before we get started.

D: My name is Dave Woolworth, and I don't remeber exactly when I was born. But the world is my home, the universe is my home, the moutains, the streams, the rocks, the earth.

N: Wonderful. Okay, I'm here to talk to you about Shane Taylor. He says he hooked up with you on the morning his brother and sister disappeared.

D: That might be right.

N: Might be?

D: Might be.

N: Could you be a little more specific please?

D: What has he told you?

N: Why does that matter?

D: Just curious.

N: Look Dave, we know that Shane went out to the Dickerson ranch after dropping his brother and sister off to catch a bus. He said that he saw you out there and you two smoked weed and got high and that he stayed out there with you for an hour or so, until five a.m. Now is that correct?

D: I'm not admitting to any drug use.

N: We don't care about your drug use right now-we just want to know what you know about Shane that morning.

D: I saw him out there. He pulled up that morning. Everyone was feeling pretty good, everyone had their clothes off and was having a good time. I think it was about 4 o'clock in the morning, according to the position of the moon.

N: The position of the moon? That's how you tell time?

D: That's right. Man has been using that method for centuries, you know.

N: Of course. You got back from a party at four a.m. on a Monday night?

D: You know this town. People will party at any time for any reason.

N: Or maybe just you will.

D: Hey, that place was packed. You would have loved it.

N: Right. What did Shane say when he pulled up?

D: He just got out and sat on the porch. We smoked some weed right there on the porch and kicked back. He told me he had dropped his sister and brother off-he said "my damn brother and sister" and he said he was glad they were leaving town for a while.

N: So he was angry?

D: A little bit. But he calmed down when he tried that fine weed. He started talking about how he wanted to join Ego Shovel.

N: What did you think about that?

D: I thought it was cool. We're always looking for new members who have a creative edge. He's a great writer and a great guitar player. That CD is the thing-have you heard it?

N: Not really.

D: You should. But no, we just sat around and talked. We didn't hurt anybody.

N: What does that mean?

D: Hey, whoa there. Just a figure of speech.

N: What time did Shane leave the Dickerson ranch?

D: He left when I did, around five a.m.

N: Where did you go?

D: I went to the 24-hour Chevron on South Lamar and got some snacks. A little breakfast food. I got home about five-thirty.

N: Did Shane go with you to the store?

D: No. He went off in the other direction. Then bam! I read about his brother and sister. I haven't seen him since.

N: You didn't have anything to do with what happened to his brother and sister, right?

D: No way. You know I didn't.

N: Okay, Dave. We'll call you if we have any more questions. I'm sure you'll cooperate, right?

D: Of course. Be glad to. See you around.

N: Good-bye.
