Witness Interview: Kevin Travers, victim's neighbor

Tuesday, March 6, 2001, 1:00 p.m.

The witness, a friend and neighbor of the deceased, was interviewed in his home at 110 Hickory Street. The interview was conducted by Det. Sam Murphy and Det. Ted Armstrong, and was recorded on a portable tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.

TA = Detective Ted Armstrong
SM = Detective Sam Murphy
KT = Kevin Travers

SM: Sorry to barge in on you like this. But we were in the neighborhood and thought about dropping in.

KT: That's okay. I just finished some developing and was taking a little break.

SM: This won't be long, just a question or two. Can you state your name and address again?

KT: I'm Kevin Travers and I live at 110 Hickory Street in Oxford, Mississippi.

SM: A couple of basic questions for you. Are you right or left-handed?

KT: Right.

SM: How tall are you and how much do you weigh?

KT: I'm about five-nine and I weigh about 165.

SM: Okay. Do you know Steve Kirby?

KT: Sure. At one time, I thought about starting a website to promote my photography and I talked to him about it.

TA: What happened with it?

KT: Nada. It was going to be too much money. I couldn't afford it.

SM: Do you know anything about him and Missy?

KT: I've heard that they dated in high school, but that's about the extent of things.

SM: Have you ever seen him over at Missy's house?

KT: No, not that I recall.

TA: You're sure about that? You seem pretty intimately aware of what went on over there.

KT: I really don't remember ever noticing him there.

SM: But you noticed JP and other people.

TA: Yeah, we were getting the impression that you spent all your time just gazing over there.

KT: Are we starting this again? Look, I never stared at Missy or her house. I never sat around watching the place. JP was so damn loud that it was impossible not to know when he was there. But that's it.

SM: So you only noticed Missy having company when there was a fight or something loud going on?

KT: Yeah. Why would I notice otherwise?

TA: I told you. Just seemed like you spent a lot of time scoping the place out.

KT: And I told you that you were wrong. Can we move on now?

SM: Actually, I think that's about all we had. Thanks for your time. We'll be in touch if we need anything else.

End interview 1:16 p.m.
