Witness Interview: Morgan Phillips

Deputy Phillips, who was injured in the accident that allowed Ed Pierce to escape, was interviewed at his room at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. Doctors requested that his interview be brief, as Phillips is still recovering.

Subsequent to the interview investigators have initiated a search for information about the individual on the bridge. Those with leads should contact

N = Detective Terry Nelson
P = Deputy Morgan Phillips

N: Deputy Phillips, we're glad to see you awake. What can you tell us about the accident?
P: I don't remember too much. We were driving along, coming up on the old railroad bridge there. I was looking out the window on the side, just the passing scenery, thinking about the game and all.

N: The football game?
P: Yeah.

N: Do you remember anything else?
P: I remember Vernon yelled "Look out!" all of a sudden. I kind of saw something dropping off the bridge, out of the corner of my eye - it looked like a person.

N: That's why he swerved?
P: Yeah. He was trying not to hit it.

N: Deputy Phillips, this is very important. Do you remember anything else about what dropped off the bridge?
P: Not really, only I thought it might be a person. Oh - and I guess there was somebody else standing above, yes, because I remember thinking why didn't they stop him from jumping.

N: There was somebody on the bridge?
P: Yes. Yes, I think so.

N: Do you know what they looked like?
P: No.

N: All right. And so then the van swerved, and that's when Deputy Schiff lost control?
P: Yes. That's when the accident happened. I don't remember much else.

N: What about the passengers - Phelps and Pierce?
P: I don't know what happened to them. I mean, I didn't have time to think, and then I was out. I didn't feel a thing.

N: They didn't cause the accident?
P: Nope. They were in back, not causing any trouble at all.

N: And what about Deputy Schiff? Apparently he was pretty tired.
P: Yeah, I offered to drive and all, but he wouldn't hear of it. He said he was fine. But I don't think that had anything to do with it. He was driving fine.

N: You don't think he might have done it on purpose?
P: No. No way.

N: All right, deputy Phillips. Thanks for talking with us.
P: Thank you.
