Biographical Brief: Bob Gilbert
 
Robert Charles Gilbert was born April 10, 1952, in Oxford, the first son of Clinton and Lisa Gilbert, also Oxford natives, who married in 1951 and are currently retired.
 
Gilbert attended local public schools, showing an aptitude for art and math, and graduated near the top of his class at Oxford High School in 1970. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam from January of 1971 until May of 1972, when he was injured in combat and sent home with an honorable discharge. He matriculated at the University of Mississippi in January of 1973, double majoring in business and architecture. After graduating in 1977, Gilbert started his own business, the Oxford Development Corporation, and embarked on a series of building projects. Gilbert was lead developer on several of the larger project of the past decade, including the Sunshine Center shopping complex, the Cotton Grove apartments, and the $10 million city hall project in 1985. Most recently he has been named director of the Dickerson Ranch business park.
 
Gilbert met and married Louise Cooke, a receptionist at city hall, in 1983, and in 1984 the couple's only son, Robert Jr., was born. Daughter Linda was born in 1986, followed by Irene in 1987.
 
Gilbert is an active member of many local organizations, and has twice served as president of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, where he is currently a member of the board of directors. He is also a member of the Oxford Rotary Club, Kiwanis International, and the Lions Club, and served on the Oxford Planning Commission from 1987 to 1990.
 
Gilbert's brother, Harlan, was born in 1954, won a basketball scholarship to Mississippi State, and completed both his undergraduate and law degrees there. Harlan is currently with the firm Henwick and Howe in Washington, D.C.
