Sheriff's deputies burst in on an illegal gambling
operation in the rear room of a local bar late Wednesday
evening, arresting the proprietor and hauling in several
            card players for questioning.

Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff Taylor Sheldon said
Thursday the raid was a testament to his commitment to
continuing the anti-crime crusade of his predecessor,
Charles Lamar, who died Nov. 8, an apparent suicide.

"This county needs to be safer for our children and
families," Sheldon said in a prepared statement. "That
means eliminating illegal activities of all kinds, and
solving problems before they escalate out of control -
before violence occurs. This should send a clear message
that we intend to put a stop to illegal gambling."

According to public relations office Elizabeth Jones,
members of the sheriff's department special
investigations team arrived at the Tip-Top Lounge at
11:45 p.m. Wednesday and burst into a back room, where 10
to 15 people were engaged in a high-stakes card game.
Jones said investigators had surveilled the establishment
for several weeks before moving in.

Tip-Top owner Lance Kay was arrested and released on
$10,000 bail the following morning, while several
gamblers were questioned and released, according to
Jones, who said the incident took place without use of
            force on either side.

Kay refused to comment on the incident.
