Sheriff's race tied for dollars

Incumbent Charles Lamar may appear to be struggling in his bid for reelection as Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff -- but if campaign donations are any indication, then the race may be closer than it seems.

As of Sept. 30, both Lamar and opponent Harold Mazza had raised nearly $10,000, with Mazza's donations totaling $9,873 and Sheriff Lamar's campaign contributions totaling $9,336, according to reports filed with the Yoknapatawpha County Elections Department.

Lamar and Mazza are battling for the post of Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff, in a race in which more mundane campaign issues have been overshadowed by the disappearance of Lamar's daughter, Macy, and the escape from sheriff's custody of suspected rapist Anthony Phelps and suspected murderer Edward Pierce. Phelps was found dead in a motel room in Amite, La., Sept. 27, and Pierce was gunned down last Friday in a 4-hour standoff with state and federal agents in Las Vegas, Nev.

Among the larger donations made to Mazza's campaign include $1,000 from the Lincoln Club of Northern Mississippi, a Republican organization; $750 from the Jackson law firm Hefner and Platz; and $500 from Oxford Mall owner Reed Chambeau of New Orleans, who also contributed $100 to Lamar's campaign.

Lamar's most generous donors include a number of law enforcement groups, including the Mississippi Correctional Peace Officers Association ($1,000) and the Mississippi Sheriff's Association ($680). Local farmer Thurston Davies contributed $500.

As of last month, Mazza had more donations from Oxford merchants and organizations, with a total of 42, while Lamar had garnered financial support from 28 local businesses and groups.
