Witness Interview: Dick Dale

Dick Dale is the only Tip-Top card player questioned the night of Nov. 12 to consent to releasing the interview transcript online. His testimony is similar to those of the 4 other players interviewed. The following is an excerpt of the interview.

D = Dale
V = Officer Scott Vittel

V: About how often did you go to the Tip-Top?
D: We had card nights every other Wednesday.

V: Was it always the same people?
D: More or less.

V: Did Sheriff Charles Lamar ever play there?
D: Nope. I heard he sometimes played, but he wasn't really a regular. Maybe he played once or twice somewhere like the Nite Kap, but I never saw him, myself.

V: How much do you usually bet?
D: Depends. Sometimes on a slow night the pot will only be 200. Sometimes it'll get going, with a lot of people, and we're talking two, three thousand.

V: And the owner, Mr. Kay - he was a part of this?
D: Sure. He wouldn't sit down and play with us, but he set up the house rules and he got 5 percent.

V: You mentioned the Nite Kap. Where else do you usually go?
D: There's the Nite Kap, the Moonlight Cafe, Willard's, and the Road House. That's just around here - it's pretty much all over, and it's been that way a long time. You got a big job if you think you're going to put a stop to this.

V: All right.
