- Witness Interview: Aimee Harberson
-
- Aimee Harberson
was contacted by Det.
Nelson and agreed to come to the sheriff's
department for questioning
N= Nelson
- H= Harberson
-
- N: Thank you for coming. For the record, could you
please state your name and address?
- H: Aimee Harberson, 702 North 15th.
-
- N: Thank you. Now, tell us how you met Charles
Lamar.
- H: That's easy. There was a break-in at the
office, and we put in a new alarm. He wanted to make
sure the bells would go off.
-
- N: So he came by the office?
- H: Right.
-
- N: Do you remember when that was?
- H: Not exactly. I think it was the end of
September.
-
- N: This past September?
- H: 1996.
-
- N: And did you agree, when you first met, to see
each other again?
- H: Well, I guess you could say the bells went off
fine. I guess it was the next day he made a social
call. He wanted to know if I'd like to eat lunch.
-
- N: And you went?
- H: Sure. I was thinking of my career, sort of a
networking thing.
-
- N: And did you see each other regularly after
that?
- H: Not really. I sure did think of him though.
There's something about a man in uniform, you know?
-
- N: Right. And did you know Sheriff Lamar was
married?
- H: Sure. But back then I wasn't serious, and I
knew he wasn't serious either. Back then he was just
looking for a detour, and I was it.
-
- N: What about now?
- H: I'd say it's serious. Real serious.
-
- N: Are you living together?
- H: No. I mean, I've stayed the night at his place,
but I haven't given up my apartment. I like to
maintain a little independence, for now anyway.
-
- N: Are you planning to get married?
- H: I hope so, eventually. It's up to Chuck - he's
the one who's going through the most hardship, right
now. I can understand if a wedding isn't on the top of
his list.
-
- N: When did your relationship -- get serious?
- H: You mean, when did we start having intimate
relations? I guess it was January or so.
-
- N: And the fact he was married, didn't bother you?
- H: No. From what I understood, I was just the
straw that broke the camel's back.
-
- N: You mean there were other women?
- H: No. Look, I don't know much about it - it just
sounded like they weren't getting along.
-
- N: Do you know Caroline?
- H: Not in person.
-
- N: What about Macy Lamar?
- H: No. I was always hoping Chuck would introduce
us.
-
- N: So you were hoping to be like a step-mother?
- H: In a way. Or at least a friend. I wanted her to
know I wasn't all bad.
-
- N: Why do you think Macy thought you were bad?
- H: Chuck said to me once, 'I think Macy knows,'
and he was real torn up about it. I imagine she'd be
angry. I know I would.
-
- N: What else did Sheriff Lamar say about Macy?
- H: He's really proud of her. She's a chip off the
old block, as they say. A smart cookie.
-
- N: So you don't know of any reason why she would
run away?
- H: No. I never heard him talk about any problems.
-
- N: What about people who might take her?
- H: I don't know. There were plenty of people who
wanted to get Chuck. All those criminals he caught.
And his political opponents.
-
- N: Can you be more specific?
- H: No. I don't have any hard facts - just call it
a hunch. I've just learned, from my job, things are
usually more complicated than they seem. People have
to fill out a hundred forms just to get a photocopy
from us, they get frustrated when things don't go
their way. They tend to take out their problems on the
government.
-
- N: Ms. Harberson, were you in any way involved
with the disappearance of Macy Lamar?
- H: No.
-
- N: Where were you on September 20?
- H: On a picnic in Holly Woods. Kirstin, she's our
supervisor - it was her birthday and we had a party.
-
- N: How did you find out about Macy's
disappearance?
- H: Chuck. He left me a message. I didn't get home
til late, and there was a message that just said 'My
baby's gone.'
-
- N: You don't know where she is?
- H: No. Like I said, I wanted to meet the kid, but
not that badly.
-
- N: All right. Anything else to add?
- H: I just want people to know it's not what it
looks like. Love is sometimes messy, and I guess we've
made a pretty big mess. But that doesn't make us bad.
-
- N: Thank you, Ms. Harberson. Do give us a call if
you think of anything else.
- H: Of course, Detective.
