To Kait's Family;

My deepest sympathy goes out to you. When reading your book, about 4 years ago, it was very easy to be put in your position. It made me
very annoyed as to "there has to be something out there". I felt like screaming for help. It's sad that every lead was a dead end. I know
from experience how it feels to be at the end of a rope. I am very
pleased to have found your web site.

I do have a few questions/comments.

1) Was Sharon Smith's history ever investigated? If that was even her
real name. It sounds like she set Kait up to be on the road at
that particular time/date?

2) It seems all the mentioned APD officers are involved. If they
prosecute any of the others who are not officers, you can bet the
entire APD scams would be exposed. It's always said "What Goes
Around, Comes Around". I believe this to be absolute truth.

3) Also, I was wondering what type of bullets were removed? Would
they by chance be from the type of artillary the Officer's use?

4) Oprah's WebSite is www.Oprah.com I have e-mailed her already on
a few occasions. Her assistants state, although Oprah can not
possibly answer every response individually, she does read them.
I would think if a topic interests her, you would receive a
personal response.

5) It's really sad that we have Police Depts that operate this way.
Criminal activities are going on in alot of PD's, but of course
they have the power of the badge. In there eyes, they are almighty
and are entitled to live above the law. I do alot of reading,
non-fiction books only and read the daily world news.

6) I do have strong feelings the murderer will come forth. I also
feel it is one person. I wouldn't think the man with the VW
would've stayed at the scene if he did it, unless of course, he
knew he wouldn't be arrested or a suspect. And then, how
convenient the off-duty officer was there.

It has to be so devastating to be living with so many unanswered
questions and knowing someone knew what was going on and what
actually happened. I surely hope you get relieve from this ordeal.

I was wondering if it is at all possible to see the case file on Kaits murder. I am have been following this case since the book. Is any info part of the Public Record or did "they"
cover that up also???

Response:The case file was made public record at the time of "discovery" in the case against the Hispanic suspects. But I have no idea what happened when charges against those suspects were dropped. Once a report becomes public record, does it stay that way, or can it be sealed back up?

I had another dream last night. I was there, and on a piece of floral-type stationary, Kait was writing to Lois....It was everything...The whole story of Kait's murder, and what she knew. I really feel that her spirit is trying to contact me...I just can't quite get close enough in my dreams.

Hi, I am truly saddened by your loss and also very encouraged by your strength. This is not only appaling because of your personal loss but is sickening to all of the country. As a nation we can not allow this to happen to our citizens. Is there any official office where a petition can be sent? I bet we could get thousands of people to sign it. Response:The problem is that there is no place to send such a petition. The Albuquerque Police Department "owns" the case.

According to (then) district attorney Bob Schwartz: "I guarantee to you, the day I start telling the police how to do things there are contracts that come in --the union comes in--do you get what I'm saying? Any time I have ordered them to do something the practical effect is they do not agree that I can order them to do something. They will bring in contractual provisions from the union, the city will say, "Who are you to tell us how our money's going to be spent in terms of how we perform our services?"

Other agencies, such as the Attorney General's Office, have told us the same thing -- "This issue is between the family and APD."

have you ever looked into the fact that the one book you wrote is very similar and bizarre to what happened to kait? maybe Miguel really did do it since the other stuff really did happen.

Response:That's not impossible. We don't know who pulled the trigger, we only know in our hearts that this shooting was not "random."

Lois, it sounds as if the police didn't even follow up on the
email you received. Is that the case? Has anyone (maybe your

Response:The e-mail provider tells us that the Internet Privacy Law prohibits them from providing information about the source of this e-mail unless APD issues a subpoena. APD apparently doesn't want to do that.

I am just now in the middle of reading the book about your daughter's murder. Out of curiosity I started surfing the web and came across Kaits Home Page. MY heart goes out to you.

I was living in CA when the fraudulent car accidents were being staged. I don't have any information to offer.

My own daughter has been involved with boys of Asian decent. It always made me nervous. She one time told me that she knew a Chinese man who was a member of a large Asian gang and his "family" could kill anyone they wanted to kill. She went so far as to say she could call him and have someone killed. Things were not good between us at the time and I must tell you her statement made me just a little nervous.

Please continue to fight this to the end.

I know that Oprah has a site on America Online. I think you go to keyword "Oprah" to get there. She has message boards and email through AOL--and somebody has to be monitoring that. That could be another means of trying to contact Oprah.

They can't just keep Oprah in a cage. There's got to be some way to get to her. she probably doesn't see the e-mail, but if we send snail mail with "personal, please forward" on it, wouldn't it be illegal for them not to send it on to her?

I found two addresses for her. I'm going to write to her c/o each one telling her about Who Killed My Daughter? and saying how much it moved me and how perfect I think it would be for the book club. I hope the rest of you will do that too. Together maybe we can make this happen.

I also read the post about contacting Oprah to have WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? selected for her book club, and this seems like a great idea. As far as contacting her goes, I just checked out the book club section on her website, and there's no way that I can tell of contacting her to suggest books, aside from her e-mail address...and who knows if she really reads all of the hundreds of e-mails I imagine she receives. But I think you, Kait's Mom, have an advantage because you are already famous and well-known for your young adult literature. Do you have a literary agent or someone like that who would be able to contact Oprah's staff? An "ordinary" person like me would have little chance of being able to reach Oprah, but since you have the advantage of being well-known already, maybe your chances are better.

I snapped into high gear when I read that question below about how to get Oprah to read WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?. I've read a lot of books from Oprah's book club, and this does seem like a book she would like if she ever found out about it. But I don't have any contact there, and have no idea how to draw it to her attention. If one of you does, please, let us know how to accomplish that.

i'm a senior in high school, and our whole class is doing research on this case for our class, and as i as well as my class mates feel that the police are definitely covering up something, the facts of who did what in this case are so clearly obvious and someone should be in jail by now for this horrible crime.

I have a question. How did Dung get on Kirtland AFB without a DOD sticker or military ID card? Did his friend Khanh Pham transport Dung onto base? Kirtland is a very secured military base, or it should be! How did Khanh Pham get by using his military dorm quarters as a flop house. Has any DOD agency answered the big question as to why ALL THE RULES WERE BROKEN BY KHANH PHAM UNDER THE HOUSING AGREEMENT FOR ENLISTED SINGLE TROOPS? Did Khanh Pham have a dorm mate? During that time period dorm rooms were shared, two troops to a dorm room. Has anyone established who Khanh Pham's assigned dorm mate was and has your PI ever had a chance to talk to the dorm mate? Weapons are to be declared by any and all personel entering a military base, did Dung bring the knife used in his suicide attempt onto base in a POV? Records of this incident would have to be warehoused. Something stinks about this part of Dung's story. Was Khanh Pham ever questioned by OSI as to why he was using his dorm room (being paid for by every tax paying American!) as a flop house for his Vietnamese buddies? Loud parties aren't allowed in the dorm rooms little on the activity and action Pham had going on in his. Where was the 1st Shirt? I have a lot of questions about this behavior going on at a secured base...any base for that matter! If Khanh Pham brought Dung onto Kirtland AFB then he would have been responsible for Dung's actions. Would Pham recieved a Article 15 for disobeying orders about "guests" and their actions on base? Along with so many other cluster f--ks with this case that is so evident I just had to write and ask you these questions.

I've been keeping up on your Journey for Justice for many years. I'm hoping one day to click on to Kait's site and see where justice has finally been done for Kait and the Arquette Family. Kait's book of Memories brings her to life. Everyone should view Kait's pictures, the last photo of Kait laying in the trauma room needs no words...that photo cries out for justice. What happened to Kaitlyn could happen to any parent's child. Her death was no random shooting, if her death would have resulted at random SOMEONE IN ALBUQUERQUE would have already come out to collect the reward money!!! Whoever pulled the trigger on Kaitlyn was covered by a much bigger group and connected to a lot of money! Is there any chance that APD will ever understand that you as the family will never give up? Is there a chance that the Law there in Albuquerque will ever re-open Kait's case and really go after Kaitlyn's killers and the power players in this cover-up?

Response:Your questions are valid, and we can't answer them. No information about Khanh Pham is available from any source whatsoever.

One of the disconcerting things about Khanh Pham is that, at the very same time he is on record as having been involved in MIA operations out of an AFB in Hawaii, he was physically residing in Albuquerque in an apartment on Gibson, (information that comes from APD Det. Steve Gallegos, who visited Dung upon his return to Albuquerque when he and his new girlfriend were staying with Khanh at that apartment).

It's been suggested to us that there may be a pool of Vietnamese immigrants whose identities have been "borrowed" by members of the military involved in Black Ops, and that, in return for allowing their identities to be used in that manner, this pool is protected by the government. Although this theory sounds like something out of The X Files, if true, it would answer a lot of questions.

Response:Both Noreen Renier and Greta Alexander are/were psychic detectives with excellent track records working with law enforcement. Noreen didn't just "want to be Kait," she went into a trance, and Kait apparently spoke THROUGH her. Some people believe this is possible. Others do not. Our family once did not believe in this but has now come to accept it as reality, because so much of what Noreen told us about what Kait knew at the time of her death has turned out to be true.

Greta Alexander was another well respected psychic who used her income from psychic work to fund a residential home for families whose children were undergoing out-of-state treatment for cancer. Greta recently died.

Neither of those psychics charged us a penny for helping us.

What do you think about how similar your daughters murder was to the book Don't Look Behind You?

Response:For those who don't understand the meaning of this question, my fictional teenage suspense novel, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU, was published in June, 1989. The teenage heroine, April, was based upon the personality of Kait. In that book April's family became involved in exposing an international drug operation and was forced into the federal witness protection program. April was chased by a hired hitman in a Camaro. The hitman's name was "Mike Vamp." One month after that book came out, Kait was chased down and shot to death. According to police, the killers were in a Camaro. It's our family's belief that her death was caused by her inadvertent knowledge about an interstate drug operation. According to the police report, Miguel (Mike) Garcia, who police believe was the triggerman, was known to his friends as "Vamp." I don't have any explanation for why fragments of information about what was going to happen turned up in fiction I wrote just prior to the shooting. It's bizarre.

Response:Four P.I.s have officially worked on this case, (two are currently working on it). Four others (including a Vietnamese P.I. in California) have contacted us with information they have picked up about Kait's case while in the process of doing other investigations. A number of insurance fraud investigators, including the editors and staff of the John Cooke Insurance Fraud Report, have been supplying us with information about the individuals involved in the car wreck scam.

If there are other investigators out there who would like to get into the action, we are open to and grateful for all information.

To Kait's Family:

A while back in March you mentioned that you had sent for a 1000+ page file from the FBI about Kait's case. I was wondering if you had received anything yet, and if so, if there was anything you might be able to share here.

I've been following this case for quite some time, and the injustice your family has experienced is infuriating. I know this sounds trite, but my thoughts and prayers are with you. All I can hope for your family and the hundreds of other families who are dealing with the anguish and frustration of an unsolved murder is that SOMEDAY SOMETHING has to happen!!! Don't lose faith.

Response:No, we haven't received a thing from the FBI. We are learning that the Freedom of Information Act exists in word only to lull U.S. citizens into thinking they are an active part of "The System."

In Aug., 1997, we submitted a FOIA request to the FBI for files containing Kait's name. We still haven't received them -- ("There's such a back log of requests, it may take years.")

May 6, 97, we submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to OSI headquarters for information about Dung's suicide attempt on Kirtland, obviously related to Kait's murder, since the bloody knife and bed sheets were checked into evidence at APD as evidence in Kait's case. Our request was denied on the grounds that to give us that information would be an unwarranted invasion of Dung's personal privacy. We were told we had 60 days to appeal that decision to the Secretary of the Air Force. On July 23, 97, our attorney submitted that appeal. There has been no response.

The bottom line is, "The System" is a farce. But nobody realizes that until they try to utilize the options it supposedly offers us.

I havent quite got to that particular post yet, please bear with me. Is it possible that someone wanted to get something from her? I can imagine Kait being able to manuever the transmission after taking 2 hits like she did, unless the fatal shot(S) were fired AFTER the car cam to a stop. With all the other corruption involved in this case, it wouldnt surprise me to find out APD fudged the report to make things seem different. I just wondered if she had something (please forgive the implication) that someone wanted... I also find it very ironic the the "Map" just happened to be in the car and the cops knew "Exactly " who Sharon was.... Come on, now

Response:The medical examiner told us Kait would not have been conscious after the bullets struck her head. So, since the first officers at the scene, and the ambulance people, all deny having touched the gear shift, your suggestion that Kait was shot after the car came to a stop is not impossible. Another possibility is that somebody entered her car after she was shot to check and see if she was dead. (A known criminal, Paul Apodaca, was standing next to her car when police arrived. He has never been interviewed, so who knows what he did or didn't do?)

The map is more easily explained. This was Kait's first visit to Sharon's house, and Sharon had given her written instructions about how to find it.

I have one question. was dung in jail as of last year?

I still hav a hard time understanding why Kaits car was in park if it was determined that she fell after the first shot...What video are you speaking of when you say that you saw th measuring tape above the bullet hole? Also, did you ever suspect that Dung was bad news? I am sorry, I know its hard for you. Also, in Kaits photo gallery, the hospital picture raises a few questionss. I noticd that Kaits eyes were all black. Could that be furthur assult or was it a pair of glasses?

Response:We don't understand about the car's being in park either. That's one of the many unanswered questions we have about the crime scene.

That video is composed of footage taken by TV news crews. News directors at the various Albuquerque TV stations have been kind enough to supply us with clips of all the footage they took at the crime scene, and a lot of interesting things turn up in those that do not appear in the crime scene photos taken by APD.

No, we didn't suspect that Dung was involved in illegal activities. I don't believe Kait did either until the final months of her life.

The swelling and discoloration were caused by internal bleeding.

Ugh! Everytime I read your book, I just want to rip my hair out. I cannot believe that APD, a government department that is supposed to "serve and protect" will not help you out in this incident. It makes me so mad to see them not work with you.

For my second period class I'm a teacher's aide and the teacher doesn't have a class so I was looking for a good book to read and I came across your book, "Who Killed My Daughter?". That was the day before yesterday and I finished the book today during second period. I found myself throughout the book going WOW this happened to a real person...there are some sick people out there! I found it sooo amazing how everything fit together..it's wild how life works when you look back it's like a well written story and you took the time to put that story on paper, or well, on computer. I appreciate that greatly...I know it must have taken a great deal of emotional strength to share this with the rest of the world. I'm sorry that there are so many sorry people out there and I'm even sorrier that some of them work for the police. Back in March, there was a post from someone in Alb about providing you with some photos they thought you'd be interested in. Then, a couple of days later, that post was gone. Just hoping that the hackers that got into your PI's files hadn't done the same here, since it sounded like a good tip! Response:We asked the webmaster to delete that particular post. That was the first time we ever deleted a post from this board, but when we received the photos in the mail and saw who was in them, we became concerned for the safety of the person who sent them to us.

I am a 22 year old woman who lives in Ohio. I just finished reading "Who Killed My Daughter?" I have two girls and I was just horrified. I wanted to let the Arquette family know that I was surfing the net and came upon the Unsolved Mysteries (the show) website. I found something interesting. There is a Vietnamese man wanted the same age as Kaitlyn. I want to say that he is wanted by authorities in Amarillo, Texas. He shot his wife in the face and killed her following an argument in a car. Her body was found I believe in the trunk of the car. The site is at www.unsolved.com or just type in unsolved mysteries. There may be no relationship in the two cases, but his name is Ngoc Van Tran. The crime occurred in September of 1996. On the map if you draw lines from Albequerque, El Paso, and Amarillo, they make an exact triangle. Response:I don't know how much, if any, power incoming police officers might have to get a case reopened, but the new police chief, Jerry Galvin, is in a position to do so and to assign Kait's case to his newly formed "Cold Case Squad."

If other police are hired on the APD, do they know about the case also?

Response:New police officers only know what they are told or what is in the case file. Since all of the information that does not point to a random shooting has been edited out of that case file, there may well be honest, new police officers (and even an honest new police chief) who don't know the true story and are supporting the random shooting scenario because they don't have any information to indicate that the investigation wasn't as wonderful as they have been told.

Have you gotten any threats since you moved, or has anyone tried to track you down?

Response:

Response:We had death threats before we moved, but not since that time. However, one of our private investigators has received threatening phone calls, had computer files hacked into, and the home broken into. The bartender from the NCO Club at Kirtland AFB who provided the information on the update page that pertains to drug importation by the military , has received several phone calls in the middle of the night --"We know who you are! We know you're the bar tender!" That bartender is no longer in Albququerque, no whoever made those calls had to have gone to a great deal of effort to track that person down.

I know that this is off of the subject, but I was thinking of becoming a writer because I was told some years back that I had natural writing ability. Now, I sent in another test to see how I progressed and they told me I had potential. How did you get to becoming a writer, can you offer me any advice? Where can I find your books?

Response:I was born wanting to be a writer. I started submitting stories to magazines at age ten and continued to submit at least one story each month (and have each story rejected) until I finally became published at age thirteen. Every writer's journey is different. I wish you success.

After I posted my message yesterday, I decided to reread your book and while reading, jot down any questions to things that seem weird to me. I apologize in advance if I end up wasting your time going over things you've been over time and time again. (I've added page numbers from the book for easy reference to exactly what I'm talking about).

1.) On page 18, you said that Brett was extremely fond of Dung. I'm just wondering what he things of Dung now.

2.) Also on page 18, Dung said "It's all my fault," twice. What could that mean?

3.) On page 22 you said that you were on the phone at the hospital and that Dung wanted to use it. You pointed to another phone for him to use. On page 23, Dung had said he had no friends, so who was he calling? Is it possible he called someone to tell them that Kait was dead, and there was no need to worry that'd she'd talk (or something to that effect)? Or maybe he called the people from the Santa Ana phone numbers on page 69 and had the charges reversed and charged to the apartment. The last part sounds kind of iffy to me because being Vietnamese and not grasping the English language very well would make me think he wouldn't know how to reverse charges.

4.) On page 26, you said that the police respected your grief and didn't contact you. Are you sure that's why? They've been so distant from the beginning.

5.) On page 28, you said that there was a beer can in the gutter next to Kait's car. The fingerprints on it didn't match her's, however could they have matched Khanh Pham's or An Quoc Le or someone else that could have done the hit job? The beer can probably has nothing to do with it, but when I read that, I was just wondering about it and jotted it down.

Those are my questions for now. Some you may find irrelevent, and I'm sorry if it wastes your time. If I find any more questionable things in the book, I'll let you now.

Response:To address your questions in order:

1. Brett is extremely bitter, as are we all. We all feel duped by having befriended somebody who was not what we thought he was.

2. I interpret this to mean that he felt responsible for getting Kait into a situation that led to her death.

3. I think it's fairly obvious that he must have phoned An Le and Khanh Pham, who were waiting for news at Dung's/Kait's apartment. Because immediately after that, An and Khanh phoned Bao Tran, the insurance fraud capper in California, to inform him that Kait was dead.

4. That's what we thought at the time. Now we don't know what to think.

5. We don't know whether the prints on the beer can match those of An or Khanh, because the police will not compare those prints with those of the Vietnamese suspects. They did, however, compare them with those of the Hispanic "random shooting" suspects, and they did not match.

Everytime I read the book, look over the information on the website, and read your responses, I feel like crying. Everything you've been through is so sad. And if all this can bring tears to my eyes, than I can imagine how you feel, which is ten times worse. I'm so sorry that this ever had to happen to you. I would never wish this on anyone, not even my worst enemy.

I don't know if you want my sympathy, but I'm praying for you. I feel so awful that this could happen. I wish I could help you out; unfortunately I cannot.

I know that you said that once you actually find the killer, you'll write another book, however, I was wondering if you might consider writing another book sooner than that. From your website, I gather that you've got a lot more knowledge about the case since the book was published. Maybe another book with the newest information since the first book would help. I don't know about anyone else, but it's sort of hard for me to read all of the evidence from the website. Sitting down with an actual book helps me visualize and comprehend all of the information. Just a thought.

Something else I'd like to mention is that the priorities of people these days really surprises me. I'm always upset when celebrities get off easier or their cases seem to get more of top priority (sort of like the JonBenet Ramsey case) than the cases of everyday people. And then here is a respectible author, a celebrity, if you will, who has spent ten years looking for her daughter's killer and she can't even get the help she needs. I don't think that this makes any sense, but I hope you know what I mean.

If I were a government official, I'd make sure you found the killer. I know that saying that doesn't help or make a difference, but I just thought I'd let you know.

Response:I don't think there's any way that any publisher is going to agree to bring out a SECOND book-without-an-ending.

Do you see any coincidence that theese insurans fraud scams that took place in the same area Albq's ex-police cheif is now? You said in your book that Kaite had seen someone of hi power could this person in high "power" be linked in the ex cheif's relocation? It just seems to coincidental to me.

Response:It does, doesn't it?

Whether or not it's the case with the relocation of Chief Polisar,there certainly does seem to be an unidentified person at a high level who has influenced (and is still influencing) the investigation of Kait's case, probably without the knowledge of most members of APD. (For an example, read the post on our "Update Page," titled "Who's Pulling Strings For Paul Apodaca?")

I was wondering if you or any one of the other family members have had any more visits from Kaite through a psychical connection? Also, I have a best friend whose dad is an insurance Private Investigator. He is located around the Orange County area. Response:Thank you for this kind offer, but we don't lack for good investigators in California. The claims investigators for major insurance companies oyt there have been absolutely wonderful, and the editor and staff of the John Cooke Insurance Fraud Report have gone all out to help us.

It's the law enforcement agencies in Albuquerque who want nothing to do with this case unless it can be solved as a "random driveby shooting."

I have read the book on this case and found it just captivating and i really do feel for the Arquette family. I have read many non-fiction crime books especially on the o.j. Simpson case and try to figure just what went wrong on the justice side of things.
After reading the book about the tragedy of your daughter i think the police were no dought under some unseen pressure from the people that was running the drug ring.I think the Albuquerque police are being threatened or paid off for what they really must know.. I just could not believe they could let go the Vietmanese aspect of the story after so many blatant lies..(no investigating)...especially a follow-up on the phone calls from the apartment at the time the supposed to be SUSPECT was in the hospital with the Arquette family..

Hello! I have read many of your books and love each and every one of them. I read "Who Killed My Daughter?" last year and was shocked at what I read. I can't believe that the police are just giving up on trying to find the killer. But I also understand that in some cases that you don't have enough information to persue the case longer. I have been in a semi-simular situation. My family's van was stolen and recovered a while back. There were no destinked fingerprints or leads to continue the case so it was shut. The person that stole it will never have to pay for the crime and that makes me really mad. At least when a guy leaves his pregant girlfriend, he will be presued for the rest of his life to pay child-support. Which means he will never be able to hold a job or anything cause the government will hunt him down over and over again. But with the crimes that have committed in our cases the criminal will never have to pay. And in both cases they took items that where worth so much to us. So I am just trying to sympathize with you and to tell you that we are all sorry for your loss. It will get better with time. Hope that you get through everything fine and write more wonderful books for all young adults.

I guess I should preface this whole email by saying that I don't have any information to help you with this case. So...feel free to skip over any of the following ramblings. I was in the 6th grade when I read "Who Killed My Daughter?". Having started reading Lois Duncan books when a friend loaned me "Locked In Time", I soon ran out of them and then wondered why, unlike so many of my other favorite writers, I couldn't find any more of her books anywhere. That is when I stumbled upon "Who Killed My Daughter?" at my local library and as I remember I was as engrossed in it as I was saddened by it--what little of the whole thing I comprehended being only 11 or 12 years old at the time.


I am 18 now, and I have suddenly found my self sitting here at 4 in the morning (while I should be packing my bags for a trip to new york city) engrossed in Kait's story yet again. Yesterday I discovered "Gallows Hill" at Barnes and Nobel and I swear I never recall this Lois Duncan book from my youth. Is it new, or just reprinted? It's excellent, by the way. I couldn't put it down and I plan on looking into some of the references listed at the end of the book. Ms. Duncan, you are my inspiration as a hopeful writer/journalist.

In any event, at the back of "Gallow's Hill" was listed the address for your web site, and that's how I got here. How I wish I could help you... and to tell you the truth, the name Dung Nyguen (if i even spelled it correctly) is VERY familiar to me, and I don't know how. I'll try to find out. Response:Thank you for your kind words. GALLOWS HILL is a new book. After Kait's death I found it impossible to write suspense novels, with our own true life horror story filling my every thought. However, I still had one more book to write to fulfill a three-book contract. My publisher was sympathetic and did not hold me to my deadline, and I finally reached a point where I was able to fulfill this obligation.

The Vietnamese name, "Dung Nguyen," is very common, sort of like "John Smith." Kait's boyfriend, Dung Nguyen, still lives in Albuquerque.

You got a lot of help from a reporter in the past. Why not contact the Garden Grove, California media and alert them to your case and this website. Someone may be interested in pursuing the Polisar connection. I bet a blanket PR release or e-mail contact with all local reporters would generate some interest somewhere.

Also, contact journalism schools and departments of criminal justice or law schools at relevant universities, such as Univ. of New Mexico and others in southern California. This could be an interesting class project or maybe a student would pick it up as a masters or doctoral thesis.

Response:No, we haven't yet taken that step.

It's been some time since I wrote you last, but in response to your question regarding the military files, regardless of what they say they purged, there still should have been a case number assigned. And considering the fact that the APD was called in, there would be a civilian case file also. Going by my Marine Corps experience, (it could very well be different in the Air Force), the base was warranted in calling civilian authorities because it was an act that included a civilian, Dung attempting to kill himself (they claim). As far as the case files go, even if the files were purged from Kirtland, they most likely would have been sent to some headquarters that maintains historical military crime files. In the Marine Corps, all outdated Criminal files are sent to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. I'm not sure what the Air Force has. Regardless of whether Kirtland still has the files, it should still be on permanent record somewhere. But more importantly, the civilian authorities obviously would have filed a report, have you gotten that information? Ask the APD what their retention policy is and if the case file was ever forwarded to the National Crime Lab. These are some new directions for you. I hope it helps.

It seems that the women in Yosemite were killed by a hit man hired by someone they knew. Was anymore investigation done on the vietnamese person where is he now? Could he have written the note himself to make it look like she wasnt angry at him. that is why the writing maybe different. Looks like it was written by 2 different people. why would someone write anote without looking at what someone elses writing looks like Maybe that girl sharon and the vietnamese person were in on this together. how about comparing his handwriting to the note and her handwriting maybe something in it matches. Most people try to write differently so that there writing is not found out. Many times they forget about one or two letters and you can usually find one letter that matches with their own handwriting. Some people are not so clever as they think. i think if you can find out who wrote the note you may find yourselves closer to the killer. I have read extensively on murder mysteries. I hope that this advice may help a little bit. Please remember they will be caught and justice will be done for your lovely daughter. My thoughts and prayers are with you and remember sometimes its usually someone that the person knows. Goodbye for now.

Response:A handwriting expert has confirmed that the note was definitely not written by Kait. But we don't have copies of other people's handwriting to compare it to.

I wrote to you once before and told you that I am a woman of prayer. this is very very true. though i am only 16 and have never felt the loss of a child i have had my share of pain and w/o JESUS i would have never made it through. anyway, i've got news for you!!!! First I just want to say that as a young teenager, I was a huge fan of Lois Duncan's books. So when I discovered the book WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, I was shocked and saddened by this tragedy your family is suffering through. I have been following your case through the website ever since I discovered it, and many times I have wished that there was something I could do to help bring much deserved justice to this case.

I don't know if this information will be useful to you at all, but I guess it can't hurt to try. Last night on the TV program 20/20, they covered a case in Albuquerque where a man named Richard or Robert Johnson (I can't remember which) was committing horrible crimes. I think the basic situations was something like this: he was raping young boys while BEING PROTECTED from punishment because he was a federal informant. They interviewed all sorts of people involved with the case, including a APD detective named Jeanie Webb (I don't know if I spelled that right). She seemed to be the only one out of all the authorities involved who was sickened by this man and was aggressive in trying to get this man arrested. However, she was later SUSPENDED for not having "proper authorization" to go after this man, because, after all, the government was protecting him as a federal informant. I was appalled that she was punished for trying to do the right thing, and while I don't know the exact details of the case, I hardly think that trying to apprehend a violent criminal, federally protected or not, is something that warrants suspension from the APD.

I guess my point is this: I don't know if your family has given up trying to work with the APD because they have been incredibly unhelpful. However, I thought of your family when I saw Detective Webb interviewed on this program, because she seemed ethical and appeared to have integrity. I wonder if this woman could be a possible "link" for you. She seems like she would definitely do the right thing, and maybe she would be able to help you.

Again, I don't know if this information will be helpful at all to you, but when I saw this program last night, I immediately thought of your family and knew that I had to post this on your website.

Response:A representative from the state attorney general's office has stated, "This office wants no involvement with the Arquette case. This is between the Arquettes and APD."

The late NM senator, Steven Schiff, took up our cause and submitted the case to Janet Reno. The response from that office was that there was not enough concrete evidence of a corrupt police corruption tigation for them to intercede, and, even if there were, the statute of limitations had run out. Steve Schiff has since died of cancer, and we have lost our one honest and couragious champion in New Mexico.

I was doing research for a teaching project when, for obvious reasons, I stumbled across your web site. My heart goes out to you and your family. I have included this book on my list of suggested works that should be taught in secondary ed, and I will certainly use it when I have a classroom of my own. It could not only help students to value life, but it would be good to show them that they have a voice! We all need to write to these officials and let them know that we will not tolerate this in OUR society. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Response:At this point we can't think past "when the case is solved." All we can think about is making that happen.

Response:Everything we learn that we are able to make public is already part of the updates on the web page.

We don't have Kait's room anymore. We don't have our HOME anymore. When WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? was published, we received death threats to the rest of the family and got out of Albuquerque. FAST.

Response:We don't have the energy for that. This message board is, for us, as good as a chat room.

I think that if you did make a movie out of this case that it would shed some light on mysteries that have long since been forgotten. I also think that what happened with your other books and movies might happen to this case and then who knows what will happen - might even backfire. I think you, everyone that is contributing to this web page, and Kait are trying their very best to put an end to this case and make it so whoever did this pays for it for the rest of their lives and Kait finally will be able to sleep peacefully where the angels fly.

To the Arquette Family:
I understand hoe you feel about Hollywood taking over in a movie based on "Who Killed my Daughter?" but maybe it would help. If you could make a deal that includes you and your family having the final say over what goes in the movie, maybe someone would come forward with information. Because like Sam said, not everyone in America reads books. But a lot watch t.v. I have been following this case since your book came out, and I have seen Kait's case on "Unsolved Mysteries." It is one of the saddest things I have ever seen in my life. Growing up in small-town Maine and not being exposed to such horrors, it is hard to believe it actually happens. I hope that soon Kait's murderer is caught and brought to justice. She was a beautiful young woman who was full of dreams and promise, and she didn't deserve to have her life cut short. Yes my name is Samantha and I went into my local library and checked out the book "Who Killied My Daughter" and I got so caught up in it, that I sat down the very min. I finished and wrote to the address in the book. I was so hurt over this I cried for two straight days. I never thought that I would get this up on the internet. I was wondering if there had ever been another book wrote with any new evidence in it? I have my own opinion but I believe everyone must.
But I was thinking, why don't they go and make a world permier movie on this and maybe someone with more information would watch it and come forward, because maybe the people who have done it are dead or moved away by now and people who know anything would not be so scared to come forward. Because everyone in the United States reads books...

I have, indeed, been approached by a number of movie studios, (including some big ones like TRi-Star), who want to do a movie based upon WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?. I've turned down all of those offers, because there is no way in this world that I am going to hand Kait's story over to Hollywood, with the possibility that it might be presented in a fictionalized version with a "Hollywood-made" ending.

Kait's murder was REAL. This case is REAL. This on-line investigation is REAL, No financial offer could possibly be enough for our family to allow Kait's story to be turned into fictionalized pap.

Response:The case remains unsolved. We are certain the boyfriend has knowledge -- (he was phoning people about the shooting hours before the police informed him) -- but our personal belief is that he is not the one who shot Kait.

I don't know if this will shed any light to the case, however, I am a native so-cal resident. Raised in Orange County. Having lived in the city of Garden Grove where the former APD Chief is now, I do know that this city is very well known for its "asian gang" activties. Asian gangs in this area overpower any of the other "race" gangs. Could there be a possible connection? Could APD's former Cheif have been directed to Garden Grove purposely?

We DO know how Polisar got the position of Police Chief in Albuquerque, NM; he is related by marriage to (then) Albq. Mayor Martin Chavez, who is related by marriage to Manny Aragon, president pro tem of the NM State Senate.

the first question that came to my mind when I first saw this websight was does'nt her killer realize that who they killed was a person? A human being with thoughts, dreams, hopes, desires? I will and would help in any way possible. If the killer should ever see this letter, I have just 1 thing to say...If you come forward and face your punishment it will spare your family grief when you are found out. Response:Yes, Kait was a real human being. As are ALL the homicide victims who get dropped by the wayside by law enforcement, when, for whatever reason, police elect not to pursue those cases or to deliberately close them down. You cannot believe the number of families of such victims who contact us daily, shrieking the song of the soul -- "Why isn't MY CHILD worth the truth???!!!" We (our family) are currently involved in the organization of a non-profit investigative agency to help people like these, who are not being served by The System. Perhaps that will be Kait's gift to the world she left behind.

I am glad to hear that you sent for the 1,000 page report. I too would be happy to send a contribution if you ever did need one. I hope that any information that you did not already know about will be brought to your attention very soon for your family and for Kait.

I am sorry for your loss. I have been a silent visitor for many months and pray you will find peace. Do you have the funds to pay for the 1200 page file? If not, how much is it and where can I send a contribution? If this criminal activity is as wide-spread as it seems, I feel I need to do anything I can to cast light on it. Once you get the file, do you have people who can review the documents and forward them to the appropriate investigative offices? Hopefully you will be able to convince your state officials to pursue this with the federal information. I am anxious to see how much the FBI knows.

Response:What a kind offer! Thank you, but we don't need donations. We do have the funds and have requested the file. Which doesn't mean that we will receive it, or that -- if we do receive it -- every name in it won't be blacked out for "security purposes." But that in itself will tell us something. As our private investigator has pointed out to us, "An important point in investigation is that THE ABSENCE OF INFORMATION - IS INFORMATION. Authorities say this is a case of a random drive-by shooting, yet with a federal case file of 1000 pages that can't be released....... oh really!!"

I think this investigator was sent to us by God.

"A Time To Kill" was a very touching movie about rape and torture in the deep south, John Grisham wrote the book with very deep feelings. Just for a minute think what if the Arquettes are dealing with a movie such as Magnum Force. Do they strap 44's on their hips and square off at 10 paces with a group of cold blooded killers? What "you" posted could be a great fantasy for parents who have waited so long for the legal system to bring justice. The Arquettes are law abiding taxpayers, they are kind and loving and also they are still in mourning for their daughter crying out for justice. Faith and good people have helped them along this far and this will continue. Many good people are speaking out and Kaitlyn C. Arquette is far from forgotten......and she never will be.

To the Arquette Family:

Since my daughter has become so interested in this case, I have been coming to the internet with her and reading all the facts involved.
It seems to me that her boyfriend is the guilty one, or knows who is.
Have you ever seen the movie "A Time To Kill?" If it was my daughter that was killed, I would take justice into my own hands and deal with whatever punishment afterwards.

Response:That isn't an option for us for a number of reasons. But one very important one is that we don't know for sure who pulled the trigger on Kait. Personally, I don't believe it was her boyfriend; I believe he introduced her to information that got her killed, but I don't believe he killed her. Was she killed by one of Dung's Vietnamese friends? If so, which one? Was it a member of the military? If so, which one? Was it a hired hitman? Was it Paul Apodaca, a man with a long history of violent attacks upon women, who was standing next to Kait's car minutes after the shooting? Did Kait take her information to the wrong cop -- one who was involved in protecting the same illegal activities she was trying to expose?

There is disagreement about this even within our family.

To the Arquette family, I want to begin by offering my sympathy to you and your family. I just read the information on your web page and to tell you the truth I am appauled at the lack of basic crime scene
knowledge.The behavior of the APD is unexcusable and that of state officials. It seems nothing was done by the book. I feel this case is a powder keg waiting to explode on the faces of the APD and state officials. I feel this is why you have ran into so many obstacles . With the possible invovement of the military it will make it even harder to get to the truth. The military is known to protect their own. I think the break in this case will only come by doing the investigating that should have been done 9 yrs ago. It is not uncommon for cases like this to be solved. All facts and evidence seems to point in the same direction. There are too many coincedences and parallel events, anyone can see this. I feel as if I know you all after reading your book. I am also saddened to hear that your case and Kait's death are still unresolved. I realize now that I saw a portrayal of Kait's death on the T.V. Response:We keep sending the FBI and other federal agencies information about the criminal activities we are informed about, (either on this message board or by private correspondence), concerning the Vietnamese mafia, corruption at APD, people in politics who are allegedly running the New Mexico drug scene, drugs imported to Kirtland AFB, and other information that the informants gave us permission to give to the feds but (in some cases, and we respect those requests) not to make available to the public. This has been like dropping stones into a bottomless pit -- you don't even hear an echo. So, in an effort to find out if any of this has been taken seriously we submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the FBI Office in Washington DC for all records concerning and/or captioned KAITLYN ARQUETTE. A couple of weeks ago we received a routine form letter from the business office, with numbers filled in by hand, asking if we would be willing to cover the cost of having 1,245 pages duplicated if they decide to send them. That number of pages tells us something. That's a very big file for the feds to have on the "RANDOM DRIVE-BY SHOOTING" of a teenager in Albuquerque -- unless they believe it was something far more significant that a random driveby shooting.

From Kait's Mom: I'm sorry, I messed up in responding to a question a couple of posts down, and I don't know how to go back and revise my answer. What I meant to say, of course, was that SHARON got the alleged dog bite on the day of Kait's funeral, not that KAIT did. I should knowby now not to respond to these posts in the evening when I'm tired.

I just finished the book "Who Killed My Daughter". I picked this book up at my local library as it looked interesting. After reading it I though I would out of curiosity see if there was any mention of her on the internet. I was pleased to find a web site dedicated to your daughter but was dismayed to find the case still unsolved.

I am still reading all the information contained at this site, but I must say I am sickened by the actions of the APD. Surely this does not happen in all police departments! I shudder to think of the injustices that must occur everyday if this is the case.

I can only hope that someday there is justice for you and your daughter/sister. I also hope that one day the actions of the APD are reviewed and they are also served with justice. Is that Kait's senior picture that is on the front cover of your book? She was very beautiful.

Response:Yes, that was her senior picture. It's odd, because when I saw the proofs, I wanted to order copies of another pose, where she looked giggly and cute instead of sophisticated and sultry. But she was adament about the fact that she wanted THIS PARTICULAR PHOTO. She actually said, "Mother, this is the image I want people to have of me."

So, in the hospital after the shooting, when the media was screaming for a photo, that's the one I had in my wallet. And this is the image a great many people have of her. It's nice to know she selected it herself.

1. Wasn't it uncomfortable to have Dung over at your house constantly if you couldn't understand his speaking?
2. How could Kait understand him talk or what he was saying if no one else could?
3. If Kait was already being chased, wouldn't she have asked you for help?
4. I think Sharon and Dung are connected. How else would Dung get a stab wound (was it after the hospital confession that he didn't give?) and Sharon had the "dog bite?"

Response:1. With five kids of our own, and all their friends, the noise level at our house was so high that one young man who never opened his mouth got lost in the chaos. We sympathized with his being a newcomer to a foreign country.

2. He was more comfortable experimenting with English when he was alone with Kait.<3>I think she was going to. Kait was apparently headed for our house when she was shot.

4.Kait got the "dog bite" at midday on the day of Kait's funeral. Dung received "stabbed himself" that night, following the funeral. It was when he was in the hospital, recovering from the stab wound, that he told me he knew who killed Kait.<5>We have no plans to expand the Photo Gallery. We think it tells the story just as it is.

Response:I wrote WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? to motivate informants and to keep information about Kait's case from becoming buried after the Albuquerque Police Department dubbed it a "random drive-by" and dropped off the case. My previous books (mostly teenage fiction) were written for entertainment value only, and because writing books is what I do for a living. Writing WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER? was different from anything I've ever experienced. My personal belief is that that book was channeled from some higher source, because in retrospect, I can't remember writing it. It's like I sat down at the keyboard, and suddenly it was there.

Where is Dung currently living, is he living in Anaheim, California? When was the last time you had contact with him?

Response:As far as we know, he's living in Albuquerque. At least, he was in 1997, when "Inside Edition" attempted to interview him, and he declined.

I wish I had a lead, but I don't. I'm from Maine, and I picked ypur book up one day years ago because it looked interesting. I ended up crying. How someone could do this is beyond me. I'm a freshman at the state university majoring in psychology, and I hope to help catch people like this and make sure they never hurt anyone again. I know how hard it is to lose someone close to you, but I can't imagine what it's like to know that whoever did it is still on the lose. My sincerest condolences to the family.
