The strange Ego Shovel cult surfaced during the Purity Knight case. Knight was seen several times at parties held at Cooters' Place, a farm several miles outside Oxford where the strange musical cult held functions.

Drugs, orgies, and rock and roll music were all part of Ego Shovel gatherings, with cult members believing that the "wavelengths" of music could bring enlightenment.

The group's history and activities had not yet been explained when, on September 19, 1997, nineteen cult members committed mass suicide, reminiscent of the Heaven's Gate deaths just months before . In a strange ritual ceremony, Ego Shovel cult members electrocuted themselves simultaneously.

The cult's leader, Blaine (known by this one name only), who survived the mass suicide, was deposed by the newest leader, "Kudzu" Dave Woolworth, a some time calculus instructor at the University of Mississippi.

The group has gone underground since the suicides, and authorities say they don't know just how many cult members survive. Yoknapatawpha Sheriff Taylor Sheldon maintains that Ego Shovel continues to be considered "a dangerous influence" in the local community. [ Continued --> ]
