Witness Interview: Katherine Dixon

Sunday, March 5, 2000 - 12:57 p.m.

Katherine Dixon was re-interviewed by Detectives T. Armstrong and S. Murphy at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Office.

SM = Det. Sam Murphy
TA = Det. Ted Armstrong
KD = Katherine Dixon

TA: For the record, could you state your full name and address?

KD: Katherine Jacqueline Dixon, 818 Country Club Circle, Oxford, Mississippi.

TA: Thank you for coming in on such short notice, Ms. Dixon. We appreciate your cooperation.

KD: You're welcome, Detective. What questions can I answer for you this time?

SM: Yes, let's just jump in and get this over with, shall we? Firstly, we'd like to know when the last time was that you saw Mr. Beauchamp alive?

KD: The Thursday before he was killed.

TA: The 13th? What time on the 13th was that?

KD: I don't know, kind of late, I guess. About 10:30, after he got home from work.

TA: Where was this, ma'am?

KD: In his home. He had lent me a book by Faulkner and I was returning it. Actually, I really couldn't get interested in it, so I brought it back.

TA: When you arrived at his home, did he invite you in?

KD: Well of course. We were friends, after all. He wasn't just going to send me on my way. Besides, there was something I had to tell him about... Something I was going to call you folks about also...

TA: And that was?

KD: I got another phone call from that... that woman. Well, now I think I know who it was or is... anyway, I wanted to let him know.

SM: Sorry, Ms. Dixon, You're being somewhat cryptic. What woman? What phone calls?

KD: Oh, I had gotten a few calls from this strange woman warning me to stay away from Dev.

TA: Warning you? Were you being threatened?

KD: Well, sort of... I don't know. I guess I didn't think so at first.

TA: Okay, how about we start at the beginning. When did you first get a call from this woman?

KD: In the fall, late September, early October.

TA: What was said? What did this woman say to you?

KD: It was quick. Something like, "Stay away from him. You'll never make him yours" or something like that. Just nonsense I thought.

SM: Did you know this woman was referring to Mr. Beauchamp?

KD: No, not 'til the third or fourth call. I think she said his name then. It was hard to figure out what her objective was...

TA: All right, when did you start to feel these calls were something to worry about?

KD: When I mentioned them to Dev. Well no, I did mention them to him right off, but he didn't seem to think anything of them. I think he made a joke. But when I told him that she said his name, he kind of got pale.

SM: Well, what did he say?

KD: He said not to worry and that he would take care of it.

SM: Take care of it? How would he have taken care of it? Did he know who the calls were from?

KD: I got the idea he thought it was Mickie. She was so possessive and all... I guess in the back of my mind I thought so too.

SM: So you assumed he was going to have a talk with Ms. Webster and that the phone calls would stop?

KD: Well I had my doubts... I mean, the voice didn't really sound like her, you know? I guess she could have been disguising it... Anyway, Dev seemed so sure. I guessed he probably knew better than I. So yes, I thought he'd talk to her and the calls would stop. They didn't scare me. Just kind of annoying, you know?

TA: And when was that? When did Mr. Beauchamp say he'd take care of it?

KD: A day or so after Christmas.

TA: Did the calls stop?

KD: Well, I don't know. I did get quite a few hang up calls after that. You know, you answer the phone, they wait a second and then hang up? I thought it could have been her. But no way to tell.

TA: Why didn't you get Caller I.D. to find out who it was?

KD: I thought about it, but then I would have had to explain to Daddy and frankly he worries so much already I just didn't want to tell him about this. Especially since I was pretty sure who it was and why it was happening.

SM: But you did get another call, right? On the 13th? Is that why you went to see Mr. Beauchamp?

KD: I did.

SM: Why not just call Mr. Beauchamp and tell him? Why were you compelled to drive to his home and tell him?

KD: Because this one was different. It scared me. She said people were going to pay, that she just wasn't going to put up with the abuse any more. And she sounded so desperate... like she was at the end of her rope or something. I don't know. It's hard to explain...

TA: What was Mr. Beauchamp's response?

KD: He told me not to worry about it. He said he had contacted his attorney about it and it would be taken care of.

SM: Did you discuss anything else that night?

KD: No ma'am. It was late and he told me to go home and get some rest. Told me everything would be just fine.

TA: Why did you wait until now to tell us this?

KD: Well, like I said I was pretty sure it was Mickie just being a woman scorned, you know? But then I saw the news this morning.

TA: What was on the morning news that would have...

KD: They were doing this thing... you know the rumors about this Natalie person and all? Well, the local news did a whole thing on her, how she disappeared and how her boyfriend was killed and how he used to beat her up and everything?

SM: Yes, we're familiar with the story. What has this to do with...

KD: Well they played those 911 tapes. You know, like they did in the O.J. case? Somebody had some of those 911 tapes of Natalie with her boyfriend in the background screaming like a monster and her sounding like some sort of tortured animal...

SM: I'm sorry Ms. Dixon, you'll just have to come to the point. How does a tabloid show of Natalie Posner...

KD: Don't you get it? It was the same woman! When I heard that high pitched hysterical voice... The woman who was calling me was the same woman on that tape.

SM: You're quite sure? No doubt?

KD: Gave me goose flesh from head to toe. I thought I was going to have heart failure.

SM: What station played this show? Do you recall?

KD: It was one of the local channels... Channel 13, I think.

TA: Have you gotten any further calls from Natalie Posner? Any after Mr. Beauchamp's death?

KD: No. Once he was dead, they all stopped.

TA: Did you receive anything else from Natalie Posner? Notes, things left on your doorstep, car windshield? Anything like that?

KD: No. I don't think so. Just the calls. And they stopped after Dev died. Anyway, I guess I should have told you sooner but like I said I really always did think it was Mickie and I worried that, if I told you, you would think I was trying to... you know, point a finger. But then when I realized it was that Natalie woman... I knew I had to tell you.

TA: We understand. So, is there anything else you should have told us that you haven't? Anything at all?

KD: No sir.

SM: Okay, good. And thank you Ms. Dixon.
